Highlights from Faith & Paul’s winter wedding at this stunning wedding venue

Mick, we couldn’t have hoped or wished for anyone else to photograph our day. We loved having you with us, your humour and professionalism was fantastic and everyone commented on how good you were. Thank you for agreeing to be a part of and beautifully photograph our wedding memories and hopefully some others to come. x

Mitton Hall Wedding

Faith & Paul booked me as their Mitton Hall Wedding Photographer via a friend’s recommendation. Their wedding was to be in February, a proper Winter Wedding! I really enjoy winter weddings, and the technical challenges they bring. I am a low light specialist, shooting unobtrusively on very expensive lenses without resorting to firing flash all day. So…well suited to the dark oak panelled walls of Mitton Hall. No, the flashguns could be kept in the bag for a handful of stylish portraits later in the day. I was really looking forward to being their Mitton Hall Wedding Photographer in February, as Mitton Hall is one of my favourite venues to work at.

Here are some of the highlights from Faith & Paul’s brilliant winter wedding with my being their Mitton Hall Wedding Photographer.

Mitton Hall Getting Ready Photos

During Faith’s bridal preparations, Paul and Best Man quietly sneaked in to the Bridal Suite to get ready. I joined them for around 15 mins for a few live, unstaged getting ready photos. Unlike the ladies, the lads take about ten minutes to get dressed and venture off to greet the guests’ arrival (near the bar area obviously!)

Mitton Hall Wedding Ceremony

As the clock slowly edged towards ceremony time, Faith was ready! Ready to meet an emotional mum and dad too, as they popped in to see their daughter in her stunning wedding dress from Fairytale Brides in Manchester. By now the excitement and emotions were running high, so I left the girls to it and joined the wedding guests downstairs.

Walking Down The Aisle at a Mitton Hall Wedding

On cue, and perfectly on time, Faith and her bridesmaids emerged from the Hall, flanked by proud dad Malcolm. They walked slowly towards the rear of the conservatory, ready to walk down the aisle. My brief from Faith, as their Mitton Hall Wedding Photographer, was to get a great shot of her walking down the aisle. Plus a great reaction shot of Paul watching her. Hmmm…ok then…

After the ceremony, we were off outside to brave the confetti run. I love the confetti throwing, the buzz and vibe of the shots just scream ‘wedding’. Afterwards, the three of went down into the gardens for a few Couple photos – classic unposed wedding photos from Mitton Hall.

The light was gorgeous, and with very minimal direction, we got a brilliant set of wedding photos in the bag, in around 15 minutes too!

SAfter the couples portraits, plus a good time for mingling with the wedding guests, it was time to head inside for the speeches. As the guests made their way, we hung back for a couple of minutes’ portrait shooting. I say portrait…more of a laugh really…!!

Eaves Hall Winter Wedding

Sarah & Michael commissioned me to photograph their winter wedding at Eaves Hall in the Ribble Valley. Eaves Hall is one of the very best, and most popular (as a result) wedding venues in the North West. Us wedding photographers love the venue too; it has everything – character, charm, atmosphere,  landscaped gardens…and (everybody’s favourite) Barry, the Event Manager – running the day with the utmost professionalism. Good to see you again, sir.

Award-winning Make Up Artist

Sarah was in the very good hands of Sonara Parker – one of the busiest MUA’s in the north of England. She should be too, having won The Wedding Industry Awards for the past two years. Sarah and her bridesmaids had the first part of their preparations down in the Lodge, then walked up through the misty January morning to the Hall for final touches and to get dressed.

Scottish Wedding in Lancashire

Michael and the groomsmen arrived wearing family tartan. Though Michael is a Lancashire lad, he chose to honour his Scottish roots. Very fetching it was too, seeing this beautifully misty day looked set to stay. Michael brought his dog along too for the wedding. Why not?

Eaves Hall Weddings

Weddings at Eaves Hall are always fabulous, whatever the weather. The mist was obviously not budging so Sarah and I decided to make it a ‘Wuthering Heights’ type of day, and using the atmospheric winter conditions to our advantage. I insisted on being called Mr Darcy though, for the whole afternoon… 😉

From the ceremony and after-drinks, it was outside for ten minutes’ of family group photos. Once completed, Sarah, Michael and I wandered off for fifteen more minutes, using the mist as part of the couples photos. We could almost have been in Scotland…

Lancashire Wedding Speeches

The speeches were brilliant – funny, embarrassing (for Sarah & Michael obviously!) and above all, heartf-felt. On schedule, the speeches were done and the wedding breakfast began. The dining room looked stunning, as the daylight started to fade to dusk and the candles did their job. ‘Mr Darcy’ retired for an hour or so before the cake cutting and first dance…

Classic Eaves Hall Wedding Photography

When photographing at Eaves Hall, it’s ‘de rigueure’ to capture the couple outside the stunning Georgian building at night. As cold as it was, and as pitch dark too – we nailed the shot in five minutes…then it was inside for some dancing…

King Street Townhouse Winter Wedding

Highlights from Sarah & Rich’s winter wedding at this unique Manchester wedding venue

King Street Townhouse Winter Wedding

King Street Townhouse is a relatively new Manchester-based wedding venue. It is owned by the Eclectic Hotels Collection, who also own On The 7th and Great John Street Hotel where I have also photographed weddings. This was to be my first wedding shoot there, just before Christmas last year. And, being December, the Manchester weather was not perfect….rain and more rain. All day! Not to be deterred, I was to approach this King Street Townhouse winter wedding with the minimum amount of kit. I travelled light, with two Nikon bodies and four prime lenses. This winter wedding was to have proper documentary-style coverage.

Manchester Makeup Artist

I got to Sarah’s suite to find the very talented Jodie on hair and makeup duties….together with her funky new ring light. The atmosphere was all calm, as Sarah and her friends were getting ready; I even had time to catch up with Rich and his mates for the ten minutes it takes for groomsmen to get ready. Easy peasy being a fella. My being a King Street Townhouse wedding photographer was suiting the 24mm, 35mm  and 50mm lenses perfectly.

Wedding ceremony at King Street Townhouse

Sarah & Rich’s winter wedding at King Street Townhouse was to be an emotional day. Sarah’s mum had recently passed away, and the air was tinged with mixed emotion. And it was Christmas too, which brings everything home to families. Sarah’s friend was brave enough to do a reading during the ceremony; something specific and a difficult passage to convey. But she did it, brilliantly.

Manchester wedding reception

The rain was still falling, so we photographed a handful of family photographs in the ceremony room, then retired to a lounge for drinks and canapes. The air was buzzing with excited chatter amongst the wedding guests, and the canapes were coming thick and fast…as was the Prosseco! I noticed too, that several of the ladies were already sporting Pantone’s 2018 official colour. Time was moving on, but the rain was going nowhere. Sarah, Rich and myself headed downstairs for a few couple photographs in and around the venue.

Wedding photos at King Street Townhouse

Armed with a small off-camera flashgun and fifteen minutes to create some portraits in the atmospheric lobby and mezzanine, we were off and running. Still no chance of going outside, we didn’t care and had sime fun…in the dry. I used a combination of 20mm, 24mm and 35mm lenses for the portraits – all natural light with a splash of flash to boost them.

Winter weddings in Manchester

Soon we were back upstairs as the guests were taking their places in the stunning, candlelit dining room. The reception looked stunning and very ‘Christmassy’. As the guests gathered, this almost intimate wedding was looking very nice through the Nikons.Very nice indeed. The champagne was being poured as Sarah & Rich entered the room, to thunderous cheering and applause. I left the guests in peace until the speeches. I was expecting a rollercoaster of emotion, and got it. Sarah’s dad was very brave and tried to do the traditional father of the bride speech, but, understandably it was all too much. It was too much for me, to try and remain neutral and just do my job. But when you have a daughter of your own, it is very difficult. Suddenly Rich and Best Man jumped into action and made us all laugh again. The mono image of Sarah & her dad hugging is one of the most moving images I have ever taken, and one I find difficult to look at.

Wedding DJ in Manchester

After the speeches, we were all outside to brave the Manchester eweather. The canopies were overhead, the heaters were on and the coffee and hot chocolate in full flow. There were even blankets for the ‘southerners’ to wrap up warm in, 😉 After a while we were back inside. Full on cake cutting, first dance and general dancefloor malarkey – all handled brilliantly by DJ NIck Campbell.

Winter wedding at this stunning

Gibbon Bridge Winter Wedding

Gemma booked me for her Gibbon Bridge Winter Wedding back in April 2018. I say Gemma, as we met at a wedding fair at Mitton Hall, organised by Little White Books. “Oh don’t worry about Simon, – if I like you, he will!” she exclaimed and booked me on the spot. Fast forward to December and I met Simon and his groomsmen on the day. And, true to form, he did…and me him! Phew! This was to be my first wedding shoot at a Gibbon Bridge Winter Wedding, and what a tough shoot it threatened to be too.

I get asked all the time – “What if it rains on the wedding day…what do you do”? Well, this was December. It was dark, virtually all day. And it rained. All day….relentlessly. I quietly reworked the brief to suit the clients. I went ‘Old Skool’ and used a lot of flash on the day of this Gibbon Bridge Winter Wedding. Even in winter, everywhere seemed to just look dark and murky…so I lit what I could, on the fly wherever possible. And, I’m really pleased with this set of images. Nothing is missing, the whole story is told, from Bride & Groom preparations up to the first dance.

So…the answer to what do I do when it rains, and we cannot even get out of the venue for a few minutes photographs, is…I do this…

Winter Weddings at Gibbon Bridge

I met Simon and the groomsmen at our prearranged time…in the bar, obviously! I had a few minutes with the lads as they got ready, then I was back into bride prep…the schedule was a bight tight, but we managed everything ok. Winter weddings at Gibbon Bridge are really well organised, with just enough separation geographically between the ‘lads’ and the ‘lasses’ – so I could get around quickly and easily. I still had to use off-camera flash as the rooms was dark, and I wanted this wedding to look bright and airy…the total opposite to what was going on outside…

The Orangery at Gibbon Bridge

In winter, wedding ceremonies take place in the Orangery. The room was beautifully decorated – not overdone, but classy, with a lovely Christmas tree to one side. Malcolm was the registrar, a chap I’ve worked with a lot over the years, so he was very relaxed about what I could do. I opted for no flash during the ceremony as the light was picking up, as was the pace of the rain! I left the multi coloured up lighters to do their thing and let the colour balance of the daylight outside remain a cold blue for effect.

Wedding Photos at a Gibbon Bridge Winter Wedding

Since we couldn’t venture outside, we opted to set up a small traveling studio…well, a studio flash head on a lighting stand. This simple lighting setup allowed me to work quickly and effectively, shooting on manual and adjusting settings as we went. No pressure then! The studio light actually added another dynamic to the day, and gave me an overall ‘clean’ look to the images. Even the family group photos were quick and painless, just like a Spring overcast day would be…erm… 🙁

We quickly photographed a collection of couple photos, and with the help of a couple of ushers, the family group photos took around fifteen minutes too.

Wedding Speeches at Gibbon Bridge

The wedding speeches were brilliant fun, a proper roller coaster of heartfelt comments and mickey taking. Simon paid me an inverse compliment afterwards, wondering where I’d been during the speeches as he thought I’d missed them! Fat Ninja 1-0 Simon. With the toasts finished, and everyone relaxing for an hour or so, we were off into the cake cutting and some dancing. But first, we noticed it had actually STOPPED raining! Gemma had a seen an image on the internet and could I match it? That was the challenge. I won’t name the photographer but I quickly set up outside on the bandstand and the couiple joined me for five minutes. I really don’t normally do shots like the bandstand image – it’s just not really my style, but a challenge is a challenge. Nailed it second shot (he hinted…) after tweaking the settings via remote control. One happy bride, one chuffed photographer at this Gibbon Bridge Winter Wedding!

30 James Street Wedding

A 30 James Street Wedding is always one to look forward to. 30 James Street Hotel is a fantastic themed hotel in the heart of Liverpool (https://www.visitliverpool.com/). Once the main office for the White Star Company- the owners of the RMS Titanic, 30 James Street is steeped in tradition…and style. The interior design is stunning, with a brilliant 6th floor ‘Carpathian Champagne Bar‘ complete with balcony overlooking the city. Here’s what the 30 James Street Hotel website says –

“30 James Street is a historic building constructed between 1896 and 1898. The stunning Grade II* listed building is situated on the corner of James Street and The Stand and offers incredible views across Liverpool’s Pier Head, the docklands and the famous Three Graces. The building was built for the Ismay, Imrie and Company shipping company, which later became the White Star Line. This building was the hub of the RMS Titanic and where the ship received its orders. The grand White Star Grand Hall was originally used as the first class lounge and ticketing office for the White Star Shipping company and to this day still offers guests a first class experience. The hall has been fully restored to its former glory with high, opulent ceilings and incredible period features…”

Helen & Alex’s wedding was in December. I love winter weddings and the challenges the weather (and venue) can bring. Luckily the day was bright and dry. Bonus! We were on a tight schedule though, so time spent on bridal preparations was limited. Here’s some highlights from Helen & Alex’s stunning 30 James Street Wedding…

City Centre Wedding

I love a city centre wedding, be it in Manchester, Chester or York. My job takes me around the UK, working at some fantastic venues, but I am especially partial to a good urban wedding 😉 And I love 30 James Street Hotel as a city centre wedding venue. Just a stone’s throw across the main road, we have Pier Head, with lots of scope for couple photos. I tend to be a 30 James Street Wedding Photographer a few times each year, and each visit always fills me with inspiration.

From the ceremony, we were off for twenty minutes or so. Being December, it wasn’t exactly warm, so we had to move quickly! A quick stroll across the main road and we were outside the Royal Liver Building. Alex & Dan’s brilliant winter Tipi wedding in Lancashire

Tipi Wedding in Lancashire

Alex & Dan asked me around nine months ago, to photograph their wedding, having been referred by Katie & Will. “It’s going to be a church wedding, with a Tipi reception in the field at the farm near Bentham. In February”. I like a challenge and jumped at the opportunity of being a Tipi Wedding Photographer Lancashire and being part of this special day. Logistically for Alex & Dan’s wedding I needed a second shooter, so a big thank you goes to Martin Hambleton for sharing what was going to prove a busy day for us both.

Here are some of the highlights from the day…

Emotional Father of The Bride

One of the images I wanted from the morning was dad seeing Alex for the first time. When the door opened, the emotions were running high. I had a lump in my throat too, but as a Tipi Wedding Photographer Lancashire, I worked through it. With the preparations for Alex  finishing, and Dan and the wedding guests already in the pub, it was time for me to head off towards St James The Lesser Church in Higher Tatham; a beautiful 15th Century building about to be rocked by 120 or so guests playing ‘wedding day sardines’ 😉

A Village Wedding in Lancashire

All was quiet at the church so far. The guests were on their way in a bus, Dan and the groomsmen in their cars. The wetaher was stunning too; beautiful sunshine all the way. I was keeping my eye on it though, just in case we lost valuable shooting time after the ceremony. So far, this was to prove a stunning village wedding in Lancashire, and as a Tipi Wedding Photographer Lancashire, I was ready for the silence to be broken…in a good way of course!

Smiling wedding guests at a Tipi wedding in Lancashire

As we left church, we had to work quickly but not make it too obvious. The light was failing and we had 120 guests leaving church, ‘fully loaded’ with confetti, forming two lines stretching over 30m. Some walk of fame this was going to be! The smiling wedding guests were ready. Alex & Dan ran the confetti gauntlet, and as the atmosphere stepped up a gear, the family group photos in the bag – it was time to jump in the bus and head to the party…

Tipi Wedding in Lancashire

The Tipi was situated on the family farm, and a big surpirise for many of the wedding guests. It looked stunning, and strong enough to withstand the threatening tail end of Hurricane Barbara. So everyone was happy!
