Emily & Jordan’s Tipi wedding photography from Sycamore Farm Barns in Derbyshire

Unique Derbyshire Wedding Venue

Emily & Jordan commissioned me for their tipi wedding photography at the beginning of 2016. I couldn’t wait to photograph this wedding – so, so unique. Emily & Jordan’s big day was to be held at Sycamore Farm Barns, just outside Matlock in Derbyshire. The farm has several barns, which are converted and inter-connect internally if required. Emily’s good friend Sarah Morton, who is a professional Makeup Artist (and bridesmaid!) was on hair and makeup duties.

The whole wedding was based upon the briliant services of All About Me, based in Chester. Together with a lot of ‘hand made’ touches to the styling, by Emily and her ‘crew’, the day was looking stunning. Organic, stylish and with that village feel, Emily and Jordan’s wedding was going to be something rather speacial. With a range of hand made cocktails, meat platters and a HUGE Paella, plus a collection of outdoor activities such as cricket, Jenga and the infamous Coconut Shy where I nearly lost my favourite 24mm as I ran for safety behind the net. Kids….dontcha just love ’em! 🙂

After ten miutes shooting in the late afternoon sun, it was time for the evening party to commence…Emily had a surprise up her sleeve! Local band The Rumour Mill who Emily knows well, had been booked to play for the evening. Emily also jumped up on stage and sang three or four numbers with them as a treat. Boy, the girl can sing! Well done lass…

Sadly I had to leave at sunset, because I had to travel to another wedding, so missed out on the low light photography. Ah well, I think we captured enough here though…

Lauren & Stephen’s wedding photos from their farm wedding in Grayrigg

Lauren & Steven were married in the charming village of Grayrigg, just north of Kendal, asking me to produce their Cumbria Wedding Photography. A professional career didn’t stop Lauren having her wedding day ‘at home’ on the farm where she grew up. Husband Steven is a sheep farmer, so it was a perfect setting to host their wedding in a marquee for a lovely village ‘affair’.

At one point there was talk of Lauren walking to church, (which is almost literally at the end of the field) but a ride in a Land Rover (with air conditioning) put paid to that idea, on such a hot and sunny day!

The villagers were all out in force, with the church gates tied with cord whilst the couple were being married; only enough change from the groomsmen convinced the local children to open the gates to let the newlyweds through.

In true style too, Lauren wanted their formal shots to be taken on the farm – we’re talking cowsheds, barns and other places, not ideal locations to put a stunning vintage lace wedding dress…but I think the shots work a treat.

Here are some of my favourites from the day…taken mostly with my usual Nikon D3s / 24-70mm & 85mm lens combinations…

The day was scheduled so I could catch up with the lads….mostly all Young Farmers, in a local pub. One Full English breakfast later they were away round the corner for a Turkish shave, including burni

Then a quick jaunt back to the farm to catch up with the girls again….

The Marquee was transported and assembled by friends and family – a proper community project…with a free bar afterwards I’m told 😉

As the lads arrived for church, the locals were out in force. The entire village turned out for this event, and sat opposite the church on a wall if not gathered at the back of the church itself…

This wedding had everything – traditional Cumbrian values and histories, a brilliant village atmosphere, plus the general relaxed and fun – loving nature of all the guests. This was simply an incredible ‘proper’ wedding. Complete with an archway made up fro farmers, plus the gates tied up with string (until the groomsmen had thrown enough money over the gates for the children to allow the string to be cut!) – this wedding had everything.

We took twenty minutes out to shoot a few bride & groom portraits. Lauren told me – “Igrew up on this farm, and would like all our portraits shot on the farm…cowsheds and all”. So we did…cowsheds and all…

Bowdon Wedding Photography // Laura & Jeremy

Bowdon Wedding Photography // Laura & Jeremy

Laura and Jeremy (‘Jez’) were married in Altrincham at St Vincent’s church, with a Marquee reception at the family home in Bowdon. This is an example of my Bowdon Wedding Photography, or Marquee Wedding Photography. Now based near Portsmouth, Laura wanted to be married at home in Bowdon, and by Rev Deacon John Penny – an old family friend. I had photographed Emily’s wedding, one of the bridesmaids at St Vincent’s and it was her recommendation for my services for Laura & Jez’ big day (thanks Emily!)

The day burst into sunshine at the right place, for a change – in fact it possibly burst a little too much for my liking (us wedding photographers are never satisfied)…but much better than the almost monsoon summer we’ve had.

As a surprise for Jez, Laura had hired a vintage VW Campervan to transport them in style; A brilliant choice.

Here are some of my favourites from the day, all overseen by Pink Pepper catering – especially Neil, who ran the reception with precision timing!

This email has just arrived…

” Hi Mick, just returned from honeymoon to your amazing photos! Don’t know how we are going to choose the best ones! Laura”

You’d think putting three glasses of Champagne down on the grass for a quick formal shot would be a straight-forward process…right? Wrong! One casualty, and two almost tipped over….tragedy.

Sometimes we all need a little luck. This is my favourite shot of the day. Taken whilst the band were sound checking, I was sitting quietly in the garden when Laura appeared on her own. In ridiculously low light, I grabbed this shot at f/1.4 on my trusty 24mm lens and nailed it. Just. Laura loved this image too – her, at ‘home’ being the new Mrs Trigg…

Wedding Details

Wedding Details

 wedding details photography manchester 001

“It’s all in the detail…”

As a Manchester Wedding Photographer, my job is to tell the story of your wedding day. From preparations, to first dance (and often beyond), I try to include as much as I can in my shooting day. A lot of photographers see details shots as a necessary requirement – like family group shots for example. But I see detail shots being as important as the ‘main’ photography, and here’s why. The image above, for example- one of my favourite detail shots ever tells a story of its own. Taken at a Christmas wedding in Manchester City Centre, this image was mid wedding breakfast. Though you can’t see anybody, the image speaks volumes about what’s going on – the style and ‘feel’ of the reception, the intimate lighting and simplicity of the table design, we can almost hear the laughter and conversation of the wedding guests. Taken with a 50mm prime lens, in very low light, this image ‘oozes’ Winter Wedding and I’m very proud to have this in my folio.

Other detail shots don’t need to paint such an informed story. These red shoes, taken again at a Winter Wedding, were captured in a very simple, graphic way. Modern shoes for the modern bride (and flowergirl!)

wedding details photography manchester 004

I won’t spend this entire blog waffling on about detail shots, and the story behind them. Some stories are personal, very specific and unique to the bride, groom, or even immediate family members. But I thought I’d tell you about this simple image of a silver locket, taken at Suzy & Ste’s Wedding in Castlefield. Look carefully at the bottom and right edges, and you’ll see it’s been dented slightly over the years.  I asked Suzy why this particular heirloom was important. She told me it had been used by herself, her mum and grandma as a ‘teether’ Wow! Now that’s unique, and personally historical. I have never seen the likes of this before or since…making this particular detail shot very important for the family ‘Memory Box’.

Other detail shots, when taken in context of them being used – in this case, Amanda reading a hand-written card by her soon-to-be husband is another reason why we do what we do.

We tell your story; emotive, funny, sad, uplifting – whatever the day brings.

But for most of the day, the detail images are simply mini still-life images; beautiful, hand-crafted or bought in elements to decorate the venue – to tie in with the wedding theme, or simply for a Bride (normally) to stamp their personal touch on the day and its design…or, as documentary photographers, we can simply show how the weather was at the start of the day, compared to the party information at the end, for Claire & Russ’ wedding in York

From personal, hand made gifts, to handed down heirlooms, sometimes I try to shoot details ‘live’ showing them in situ…

…or sometimes I have time to tell a mini story about the wedding venue, its location and its character.

wedding details photography manchester 026wedding details photography manchester 027

But, whatever the wedding, there is always something fizzy to drink, something seasonal, or simply classic.

wedding details photography manchester 028wedding details photography manchester 029wedding details photography manchester 030wedding details photography manchester 031wedding details photography manchester 032

Sometimes it’s what you don’t see that makes the detail images so strong.

When photographing the bridal preparations is when the most personal of details are seen.

Gifts from husbands or partners-to-be, gifts and heirlooms handed over by close family, detail shots are paramount in being part of the whole story.
