Manchester School Photographer
A recent photography project for St. Philips R.C. Primary School, Salford
When not photographing weddings, one of my commercial photography skills is in school photography. I am hired to photograph a day (or more) in the life of a school for it’s website, prospectus or other PR.
Please note – I am fully DBS checked, with references and a printed folio of work available. This online gallery is used with kind permission from Mr Barrett, Head Teacher at St Philips RC Primary school in Salford, plus the parents of the children featured, and fully complies with GDPR.
The story behind This shoot
I was asked by the headmaster of St Philip’s R.C. Primary School in Salford to spend some time at the school and document the day to day running – the classrooms, teachers, the pupils and the activities that happen every week. I had an ‘Access All Areas’ pass and spent a couple of days there, photographing new images for the new school prospectus and website. I approached the project like I do a wedding – quietly and unobtrusively. Obviously a few of the images were staged – they had to be to work on the website and in the printed material…but it’s still difficult to pick them out! 😉
Here’s the project intercut with the real prospectus. The project is over a year old now – I have deliberately ‘shelved the project’ for over a year to feature it. Thanks again to Headmaster Mr Barrett and the parents for their support and permission to feature these images…
The school uniform had gone through a complete redesign, from the original green to this stunning Royal Blue. The plan was to photograph the children as early as possible in the term, so they looked their natural sparkly best… 😉
It was great spending all this time at the school, seeing the vast range of subjects being taught; the phonics classes, literacy and numeracy, music, choir, dance and the various indoor and outdoor pursuits – gardening club, art club, PE lessons. The staff are so dedicated to the children and their personal achievements. Believe me….teachers have a tough, demanding job. I couldn’t do it. And they earn every penny…and every day off they manage to enjoy, when not marking books and planning the week’s lessons…
Sometimes its nice to also meet celebrity sports people too…like Britain’s greatest ever gymnast Beth Tweddle MBE, who came to talk to the children about ambition, and working hard to be the best you can, whatever your interest; and how her gymnastics centres aimed for children from the age of 2 upwards can bring a firm grounding for budding Olympians! Very interesting listening to her…and an honour to meet her…
