Manchester Wedding Photographer – Best of 2017

Best of 2017

Some of my favourite images from 2017 as a Manchester Wedding Photographer

2017 in Pictures

2017 has been a brilliant year for me. I have photographed fifty weddings, all around the North West, with a slight detour in June, to Limerick in Ireland too. I have met and worked with some wonderful people, as well as some of my favourite venues, such as Eaves Hall, Mitton Hall, On The 7th, Styal Lodge, Sandhole Oak Barn, Bartle Hall and Beeston Manor to name but a few.

Top Wedding Venues

I have also had the opportunity to not only be a Manchester Wedding Photographer, but a Lancashire Wedding Photographer, Liverpool Wedding Photographer, a Tipi Wedding Photographer and Cheshire Wedding Photographer too. Some new venues to me include the fabulous West Tower, King Street Townhouse and Rivington Hall Barn, and I look forward to working there again in 2018.

Choosing my favourite images from the 50 weddings I photographed in 2017 has proved to be a very difficult task. I gave up in the end! But these images are just some of my favourites from the year – and I have to thank each and every client I have had in front of the Nikons for being brilliant and allowing me to photograph their special day in my natural style. Thank you guys! (Wow, this is almost turning into an acceptance speech… 😉 )

I hope you like them. If you do…why not get in touch to discuss your wedding day. The 2018 Diary is filling up quickly now, and I wouldn’t want to disappoint anybody by being unavailable…

Why not get in touch and tell me about your Wedding plans?

Iconic Liverpool Wedding Venue

Kelly & Kevin booked me to produce their 30 James Street Wedding Photography over the internet. Theirs was a classic wedding where I met my clients on the day, armed with my schedule and the Nikons. 30 James Street was originally the White Star Line HQ Building, Albion House – the main office for the Titanic, where passengers could purchase their tickets for the (doomed) maiden voyage. Recently refurbished, 30 James Street is now a stunning, and very sought-after exclusive wedding venue in Liverpool.

On board with me was Steve from Capture Your Moments, based in Liverpool. Great fun to work with, Steve and his assistant kept themselves very busy throughout the day. You can see the highlights of Kelly & Kevin’s wedding video HERE.

Laura & James were married at ‘The Titanic Hotel’ in Liverpool recently. Based opposite The Pier Head, 30 James Street Hotel was the original White Star office for the Titanic – here’s a quote from the hotel’s website:

” The Grade II* listed building was built for the Ismay, Imrie and Company shipping company, which later became known as the White Star Line. Following the death of founder Thomas Ismay, his son, J Bruce Ismay, became chairman and managing director of the company, and created some of White Star Line’s most famous ships, including RMS Titanic, whose port of registry was the White Star Line headquarters, which now serves as 30 James Street, a Titanic-themed hotel.”

The Titanic, it’s history and subsequent discovery are one of my guilty pleasures – I have a few books on the subject, here at MCP HQ – so it was a ‘no-brainer’ to accept the invitation to photograph Laura & James’ wedding day at such an iconic building. I love working in Liverpool too – the sheer scale of some of the buildings in and around Pier Head…plus THAT wonderful Town Hall. So, here is my maiden voyage as a 30 James Street Hotel Wedding Photographer.

I caught up with Laura and the girls at 30 James Street as the rain was falling, and the weather looking ominously dreadful for the day – but anybody who is / has been in a band uses the saying ‘Bad sound check, great gig’. I use this as my philosophy too. Yep, I did five years in bands to earn that right 😉 I am alwyas optimistic that the wetaher will break, even if only time to shoot a few bride and groom portraits and family group shots. Today was no exception, and through the rain spattered windows, I assured the girls that ‘the gig would be good’…gulp.

And, as if by magic, the rain disappeared and the sun came out, an hour before the ceremony over at St Sebastian’s in Kensington.

You’ll notice Stuart peeping into shot top left, quietly doing his thing too; a great videographer to work alongside, and one as geeky as me when it comes to talking cameras, technical and all things post production. Brilliant to work with and great company too!

From church, we were off to The Pier Head for a few Bride & Groom portraits. I travelled with Laura & James to save time and be more ‘live’ with the photography…even down to capturing their wedding day ‘selfie’ which appeared on Facebook later that day…and no, they didn’t spot me taking it.

With a two pronged ‘attack’ by James’ Best Men, which was hilarious…and pretty embarrasing for poor James at times, the wedding breakfast and speeches were duly finished.

Laura & James invited Stuart and I up to their suite…just to see was believing! Incredible! We grabbed a couple of images before the evening celebrations began, and Laiura & james hit the dnace floor. Now…we were in Liverpool, with a Liverpool couple, at a wedding venue in the heart of Liverpool’s Pier Head. Their first dance song was an Oasis track…a brilliant choice too…but all bets were now off 😉

“It’s all in the detail…”

As a Manchester Wedding Photographer, my job is to tell the story of your wedding day. From preparations, to first dance (and often beyond), I try to include as much as I can in my shooting day. A lot of photographers see details shots as a necessary requirement – like family group shots for example. But I see detail shots being as important as the ‘main’ photography, and here’s why. The image above, for example- one of my favourite detail shots ever tells a story of its own. Taken at a Christmas wedding in Manchester City Centre, this image was mid wedding breakfast. Though you can’t see anybody, the image speaks volumes about what’s going on – the style and ‘feel’ of the reception, the intimate lighting and simplicity of the table design, we can almost hear the laughter and conversation of the wedding guests. Taken with a 50mm prime lens, in very low light, this image ‘oozes’ Winter Wedding and I’m very proud to have this in my folio.

Other detail shots don’t need to paint such an informed story. These red shoes, taken again at a Winter Wedding, were captured in a very simple, graphic way. Modern shoes for the modern bride (and flowergirl!)

I won’t spend this entire blog waffling on about detail shots, and the story behind them. Some stories are personal, very specific and unique to the bride, groom, or even immediate family members. But I thought I’d tell you about this simple image of a silver locket, taken at Suzy & Ste’s Wedding in Castlefield. Look carefully at the bottom and right edges, and you’ll see it’s been dented slightly over the years.  I asked Suzy why this particular heirloom was important. She told me it had been used by herself, her mum and grandma as a ‘teether’ Wow! Now that’s unique, and personally historical. I have never seen the likes of this before or since…making this particular detail shot very important for the family ‘Memory Box’.

Other detail shots, when taken in context of them being used – in this case, Amanda reading a hand-written card by her soon-to-be husband is another reason why we do what we do.

We tell your story; emotive, funny, sad, uplifting – whatever the day brings.

But for most of the day, the detail images are simply mini still-life images; beautiful, hand-crafted or bought in elements to decorate the venue – to tie in with the wedding theme, or simply for a Bride (normally) to stamp their personal touch on the day and its design…or, as documentary photographers, we can simply show how the weather was at the start of the day, compared to the party information at the end, for Claire & Russ’ wedding in York

From personal, hand made gifts, to handed down heirlooms, sometimes I try to shoot details ‘live’ showing them in situ…

…or sometimes I have time to tell a mini story about the wedding venue, its location and its character.

wedding details photography manchester 026wedding details photography manchester 027

But, whatever the wedding, there is always something fizzy to drink, something seasonal, or simply classic.

wedding details photography manchester 028wedding details photography manchester 029wedding details photography manchester 030wedding details photography manchester 031wedding details photography manchester 032

Sometimes it’s what you don’t see that makes the detail images so strong.

When photographing the bridal preparations is when the most personal of details are seen.

Gifts from husbands or partners-to-be, gifts and heirlooms handed over by close family, detail shots are paramount in being part of the whole story.
