Slaidburn Lancashire Wedding Photography // Vicki & Colin

Vicki & Colin were married recently in Slaidburn, near Clitheroe, Lancashire. I’ve always loved Slaidburn, ever since I was a boy – it was a favourite for school trips. And, hailing from Lancaster, Slaidburn always feels like ‘home’ to me…I’d love to make it home one day. It’s a fantastic Lancashire farming village. When the enquiry came in for Vicki & Colin’s wedding, I simply jumped at the chance of photographing them! So, here’s an example of my Slaidburn Lancashire Wedding Photography, and some of my favourite images from the day.

Vicki & Colin’s day started early over in Blackburn – at Vicki’s parents’ house. I duly arrived slightly early (as I try to do) to find the girls’ preparations in full swing. Vicki’s mum kindly offered me a coffee, feeling slightly sorry for me having to ‘deal’ with all these women. Thanks – much appreciated!

On time, in fact slightly early I left the house to travel over to Slaidburn to catch up with the groomsmen in The Hark To Bounty Inn. But, firstly I dropped into the Village Hall, where Vicki and ‘The Team’ had dressed and set the main hall, ready for the wedding breakfast. And beautiful it looked too…classic, understated and very ‘village’.

After a couple of ‘liveners’, we walked up the main street to St Andrew’s Church. THIS wedding was special, different to most; Vicki & Colin were to walk from the church back to the Village Hall after the ceremony, so we could shoot the Bride & Groom portraits totally live with little time constraints. Fantastic!

Vicki arrived in style – a 1968 Jaguar 250, which was pure class. British Racing Green too….mmmm. Anyway, back to Vicki – looking stunning, surrounded by six bridesmaids and eager to get into church to see Colin. But there was a slight problem – Grandma had been held up travelling over from Blackburn, so the ceremony was put back by around 30 minutes. We all knew about it, and Vicki was adamant she wasn’t getting married without Gran being there. And I don’t blame her! But we had to make a start, and so a smiling and mildly tearful (happy tears!) bride made her way into church, with proud dad holding on to her arm. Gran appeared during the first hymn…phew!

With our ‘walk’ taking around 30 minutes, we arrived at the Village Hall. The car park had been converted with hay bales and a gazebo. Though the weather wasn’t very sunny, it was pleasant and helped create a brilliant atmosphere.

We were then called in for the wedding breakfast. A classic home-made style three course meal, complete with home made cakes….the wedding breakfast had everything. Organic and with a ‘home-made feel’ , everything just worked.

And that was me done! A full-on, brilliant village wedding with a great group of family and friends. Thank you for inviting me to capture your wedding day!

Mitton Hall Wedding – Faith & Paul

Highlights from Faith & Paul’s winter wedding at this stunning wedding venue

Mick, we couldn’t have hoped or wished for anyone else to photograph our day. We loved having you with us, your humour and professionalism was fantastic and everyone commented on how good you were. Thank you for agreeing to be a part of and beautifully photograph our wedding memories and hopefully some others to come. x

Mitton Hall Wedding

Faith & Paul booked me as their Mitton Hall Wedding Photographer via a friend’s recommendation. Their wedding was to be in February, a proper Winter Wedding! I really enjoy winter weddings, and the technical challenges they bring. I am a low light specialist, shooting unobtrusively on very expensive lenses without resorting to firing flash all day. So…well suited to the dark oak panelled walls of Mitton Hall. No, the flashguns could be kept in the bag for a handful of stylish portraits later in the day. I was really looking forward to being their Mitton Hall Wedding Photographer in February, as Mitton Hall is one of my favourite venues to work at.

Here are some of the highlights from Faith & Paul’s brilliant winter wedding with my being their Mitton Hall Wedding Photographer.

Mitton Hall Getting Ready Photos

During Faith’s bridal preparations, Paul and Best Man quietly sneaked in to the Bridal Suite to get ready. I joined them for around 15 mins for a few live, unstaged getting ready photos. Unlike the ladies, the lads take about ten minutes to get dressed and venture off to greet the guests’ arrival (near the bar area obviously!)

Mitton Hall Wedding Ceremony

As the clock slowly edged towards ceremony time, Faith was ready! Ready to meet an emotional mum and dad too, as they popped in to see their daughter in her stunning wedding dress from Fairytale Brides in Manchester. By now the excitement and emotions were running high, so I left the girls to it and joined the wedding guests downstairs.

Walking Down The Aisle at a Mitton Hall Wedding

On cue, and perfectly on time, Faith and her bridesmaids emerged from the Hall, flanked by proud dad Malcolm. They walked slowly towards the rear of the conservatory, ready to walk down the aisle. My brief from Faith, as their Mitton Hall Wedding Photographer, was to get a great shot of her walking down the aisle. Plus a great reaction shot of Paul watching her. Hmmm…ok then…

Wedding Photos at Mitton Hall

After the ceremony, we were off outside to brave the confetti run. I love the confetti throwing, the buzz and vibe of the shots just scream ‘wedding’. Afterwards, the three of went down into the gardens for a few Couple photos – classic unposed wedding photos from Mitton Hall.

The light was gorgeous, and with very minimal direction, we got a brilliant set of wedding photos in the bag, in around 15 minutes too!

Speeches at a Mitton Hall Wedding

SAfter the couples portraits, plus a good time for mingling with the wedding guests, it was time to head inside for the speeches. As the guests made their way, we hung back for a couple of minutes’ portrait shooting. I say portrait…more of a laugh really…!!

brilliant day at this stunning

Fisherman’s Retreat Wedding Photographer

Rewind to last summer when it was hot, hot hot and my opportunity of being a Fisherman’s Retreat Wedding Photographer again. I say again, as this was my second visit to this stunning wedding venue in Ramsbottom. Maria & Steven are Ramsbottom residents (‘Rammie’s’) , and wanted a very local, relaxed feel for their summer Fisherman’s Retreat wedding. I got the call to meet up and talk about what I could offer Maria & Steven as their Fisherman’s Retreat Wedding Photographer. So, where best to meet, than actually at the venue one evening. Five minutes from their home, twenty from mine. Perfect! We hit it off straight away, and we booked everything in on the spot. This was going to be a very relaxed day…with a twist though…

The Royal Wedding

The bridal preparations were broken up into chunks, whilst the girls filled their glasses with Champagne and watched Megan & Harry’s Royal Wedding on the TV. I was still trying to be a Fishermans Retreat Wedding Photographer, and stay out of the way of the TV screen while they all gasped in sync at Tom Hardy and David Beckham

Mr Wilson’s Second Liners

And here comes the twist! Just as the first dance was in full swing, the party was gate-crashed by the brilliant Mr Wilson’s Second Liners. Down the path they marched pumping out club anthems on brass instruments. The dance floor emptied, together with the DJ to watch these guys. If you have never seen them in action, you should watch them HERE. Then book them! They are simply incredible. I first met them at Sarah & Charlotte’s wedding a year or so back – and was wowed then too…

Mitton Hall Wedding

Highlights from Jodie & Kane’s autumn wedding at this stunning Lancashire venue

Popular Lancashire wedding venues

A Mitton Hall wedding is one of Lancashire’s most popular, at one of the most popular venues too;  ‘A stunning country house hotel in the heart of the Ribble Valley’ is how it’s described, and with good reason. As popular Lancashire wedding venues go, Mitton Hall is also high up on the wedding photographers’ Top 10 venues to work at. It has everything from dark, oak panelled rooms, a stunning main hall area, plus a seemingly constantly evolving garden landscape in which to capture stunning wedding images. Here are some of the highlights from their autumn wedding, with most of the wedding suppliers sourced via Little White Books

Lancashire Makeup Artist

On makeup duties was the very talented Suzanne Nix from Suzanne Jayne Beauty in Chorley. I know Suzanne quite well – I photographed her wedding to Danny back in August at Rivington Hall Barn. The flowers were hand delivered by Sarah Crookston herself from The Rose Boutique in Pemberton. Lovely to see you again Sarah!

Lancashire Wedding Video

Working alongside me for the day were the award-winning duo that is Helen & Dave from Abbey Video in Whalley. These guys won the Best Wedding Videographers 2017/18 section in the Great Northern Wedding Awards alongside myself (I won Best Male Photographer!) Helen stayed with the girls as they were finishing their preparations, while I made my way to church to catch up with Dave and the groomsmen for a few relaxed formal portraits. Well, we had a little time on our hands for a change! 😉

Beautiful wedding transport

From the church, we headed 30 mins across Lancashire to Mitton Hall. Jodie & Kane travelled in style with a beautiful wedding car from Malvern Wedding Cars. I managed to beat the happy couple to the venue by three minutes…phew! A few formal images with the car later, we headed off into the gardens to beat the weather and failing light…(and also to allow the guests to get served at the bar!). Dave and myself worked together seemlessly for around 15 minutes grabbing some lovely natural moments between the newlyweds. This wedding was a little more formal in style than I normally shoot, but I was enjoying every minute of it! While we were outside, the guests were being entertained by the talented Tom Scothern.

Waiting inside was also one of the most stunning wedding cakes I have ever seen. Classic, simple and very understated. A beautifiul work of art from Kelly at the Pink Frosting Cake Company.

Recommended wedding DJ

With speeches finished, it was soon time for the evening entartainment to commence. On hand were renowned wedding company DFC and one of their brilliant DJ’s. With a brilliantly choreographed cake cut, first dance and father & daughter dance, the evening hit the ground running! On hand too, were Agent Smith – a local (and brilliant) Rock & Pop Wedding Band. All amps up to eleven then…

Browsholme Hall Wedding Photography

Lisa & Jon’s wedding photos from Browsholme Hall in the Ribble Valley

bride and groom at browsholme hall

Lisa & John were married recently at St Helen’s Parish Church in Waddington, followed by a reception at the  the wonderful Tithe Barn at Browsholme Hall, giving me this opportunity of demonstrating my Browsholme Hall Wedding Photography. The day started very calmly. I say calmly, since I’d met Lisa & John last year at their friends’ wedding…Claire & Mike, which was a fantastic, full-on wedding celebration from start to finish. Many of the same crowd would be here today…but for now, it was just me and the birds tweeting. Oh…and the sound of a hairdryer as I approached the cottage…

browsholme hallbrowsholme_hall_wedding_photography02wedding shoes

Inside I found Lisa, mum and her two bridesmaids getting ready in the quaint cottage literally next door to the Tithe Barn. All was going well- the kettle was constantly hot, the flowers had arrived….brilliant – plenty for me to get on with then! 😉

In charge of makeup duties was the charming, friendly and soon mum-to-be Rachel Bottomley.

browsholme_hall_wedding_photography04browsholme_hall_wedding_photography05

Rachael had everything in control and everyone was ready on time, menaing we could get Lisa into her dress quickly and have time for a few portraits too…

…then it was off to Waddington to catch up with John and the guests. Now….where could they be? Would they be quietly sitting in church, discussing the day to come? Nope! A full-size coach suddenly arrived in the village and everybody poured out into the Waddington Arms, around 150 yds away from the church 😉

Now we were cooking! This is what I remember from last summer in Manchester…

With around twenty minutes to the ceremony, John and his groomsmen walked over to church, closely followed by the guests and the laughter that came with them!

browsholme_hall_wedding_photography19browsholme_hall_wedding_photography20

As the clock struck two, Lisa appeared with dad. She was already grinning from ear to ear about marrying the man of her dreams (a little bird told me, Lisa!) and couldn’t wait to get into church to see John. So, without further ado, in we went…

From the church, the short drive took us to Browsholme Hall, complete with waiting helicopter to take the new Mr & Mrs Jones for a pleasure flight around the Ribble Valley. I was invited along, but politely declined the option of shooting half-selfies for 30 mins whilst strapped into the front seat… 😉  Instead, I used the time more productively mingling with the guests. I know, I know, I’m such a professional…

With a quick portrait session before take off, I grabbed these natural images of the newlyweds in the gardens at Browsholme…which are beautiful, whatever the weather.

Back on terra firma, Lisa & John enjoyed pre-wedding breakfast drinks with their guests on the lawn in front of the Hall. The bouncy castle could wait for bit yet…

With the wedding breakfast and (hilarious) speeches finished, it was outside – yep, for the bouncy castle!

As the light was fading for the day, we went to shoot some more bride and groom portraits. No flash, just natural light and a couple of fast prime lenses. Simple as…

With the first dance came the veiled threat of Jagerbombs, so I quietly packed up and left the party stepping up a gear. With my cameras safely back in the car, I left leaving ‘what goes on tour, to remain on tour…’ 😉

Laura & James were married at ‘The Titanic Hotel’ in Liverpool recently. Based opposite The Pier Head, 30 James Street Hotel was the original White Star office for the Titanic – here’s a quote from the hotel’s website:

” The Grade II* listed building was built for the Ismay, Imrie and Company shipping company, which later became known as the White Star Line. Following the death of founder Thomas Ismay, his son, J Bruce Ismay, became chairman and managing director of the company, and created some of White Star Line’s most famous ships, including RMS Titanic, whose port of registry was the White Star Line headquarters, which now serves as 30 James Street, a Titanic-themed hotel.”

The Titanic, it’s history and subsequent discovery are one of my guilty pleasures – I have a few books on the subject, here at MCP HQ – so it was a ‘no-brainer’ to accept the invitation to photograph Laura & James’ wedding day at such an iconic building. I love working in Liverpool too – the sheer scale of some of the buildings in and around Pier Head…plus THAT wonderful Town Hall. So, here is my maiden voyage as a 30 James Street Hotel Wedding Photographer.

I caught up with Laura and the girls at 30 James Street as the rain was falling, and the weather looking ominously dreadful for the day – but anybody who is / has been in a band uses the saying ‘Bad sound check, great gig’. I use this as my philosophy too. Yep, I did five years in bands to earn that right 😉 I am alwyas optimistic that the wetaher will break, even if only time to shoot a few bride and groom portraits and family group shots. Today was no exception, and through the rain spattered windows, I assured the girls that ‘the gig would be good’…gulp.

And, as if by magic, the rain disappeared and the sun came out, an hour before the ceremony over at St Sebastian’s in Kensington.

You’ll notice Stuart peeping into shot top left, quietly doing his thing too; a great videographer to work alongside, and one as geeky as me when it comes to talking cameras, technical and all things post production. Brilliant to work with and great company too!

(Pssst! I loved the wonky Silver Lady on the Rolls… )

From church, we were off to The Pier Head for a few Bride & Groom portraits. I travelled with Laura & James to save time and be more ‘live’ with the photography…even down to capturing their wedding day ‘selfie’ which appeared on Facebook later that day…and no, they didn’t spot me taking it.

With our twenty or so minutes up, we were off to 30 James Street to catch up with guests in The Carpathia Restaurant

As the guests were called to dinner, I managed a few minutes with the newlyweds for a few more portraits…well, it’d be rude not to!

With a two pronged ‘attack’ by James’ Best Men, which was hilarious…and pretty embarrasing for poor James at times, the wedding breakfast and speeches were duly finished.

Laura & James invited Stuart and I up to their suite…just to see was believing! Incredible! We grabbed a couple of images before the evening celebrations began, and Laiura & james hit the dnace floor. Now…we were in Liverpool, with a Liverpool couple, at a wedding venue in the heart of Liverpool’s Pier Head. Their first dance song was an Oasis track…a brilliant choice too…but all bets were now off 😉
