Gilpin Lake House Wedding

Highlights from Sarah & Charlotte’s summer wedding at this stunning Lake District venue.

Gilpin Lake House Wedding

Sarah & Charlotte asked me to photograph their Gilpin Lake House wedding, having seen my work at The Great Northern Wedding Show in Bolton – an event which happens twice a year at The Bolton USN Arena. How could I say no? The wedding was booked for June, but as we all know, the Lake District weather can be a proper lottery. So…here we were at the stunning Lake House, all secluded and private with an out door ceremony planned. But we had rain. Lots of Lake District rain! But, nobody seemed bothered as we switched to Plan B, and opted for an indoor ceremony with around a hundred guests in the main house.

Weddings at The Gilpin

Sarah & Charlotte were getting ready together with some friends and family members. The door to the suite seemed to revolve with a steady stream of well-wishers peeping round the door to say hello and good luck. This was to be my first visit to Gilpin Lake House, and already I was loving the freedom that the girls allowed me – ‘Documentary wedding photography,  Lake District style‘. As the guests arrived in their cars and minibus, the atmosphere was building…so, alas was the rain. 🙁

Stylish Lake District Wedding

As the guests arrived, I opted to capture this stylish Lake District wedding on prime lenses, mostly a 50mm and a 35mm. These lenses allow me to work in low light without using flash, so I can blend in with the guests more. As the Lake House was filling, I was down to using more wide angle lenses for the girls’ arrival into the ceremony room. It was going to be tight for space, but if we all breathed in a bit…

Unique Wedding Entertainment

From the ceremony, we ran…literally…to the marquee behind the Lake House. Waiting for us, and firing up on cue were the incredible Mr Wilson’s Second Liners. Seeing (and hearing) is believing with these guys. Full on club anthems, New Order and Human League etc covers – all on brass and ukelele – incredilble! That was everybody sorted for the next hour or so, whilst the canapes and cocktails flowed…and the weather broke for the better.

Wedding speeches in a marquee

The speeches for Sarah & Charlotte’s wedding were to prove…er, colourful. Sarah’s brother was up second and was simply hilarious….all at Sarah’s expense! I cannot recall the content, but trust me, he didn’t pull any punches and brought the marquee to it’s knees in laughter. Then…it was Sarah’s turn. And whatever she had received, she gave back double, and totally floored her brother and his speech, bringing the whole house down to thunderous laughter and applause. Trust me, it was an impressive performance! After everyone had recovered and eaten the wedding breakfast, Sarah, Charlotte & myself popped out for ten minutes to grab some portraits before the cake cut. No first dance as such, just a relaxed ‘boogie on down’ was planned after the nieces had put on a dancing performance to the newlyweds as a present….brilliant stuff.
