Manchester Wedding Photographer – Best of 2017

Best of 2017

Some of my favourite images from 2017 as a Manchester Wedding Photographer

2017 in Pictures

2017 has been a brilliant year for me. I have photographed fifty weddings, all around the North West, with a slight detour in June, to Limerick in Ireland too. I have met and worked with some wonderful people, as well as some of my favourite venues, such as Eaves Hall, Mitton Hall, On The 7th, Styal Lodge, Sandhole Oak Barn, Bartle Hall and Beeston Manor to name but a few.

Top Wedding Venues

I have also had the opportunity to not only be a Manchester Wedding Photographer, but a Lancashire Wedding Photographer, Liverpool Wedding Photographer, a Tipi Wedding Photographer and Cheshire Wedding Photographer too. Some new venues to me include the fabulous West Tower, King Street Townhouse and Rivington Hall Barn, and I look forward to working there again in 2018.

Choosing my favourite images from the 50 weddings I photographed in 2017 has proved to be a very difficult task. I gave up in the end! But these images are just some of my favourites from the year – and I have to thank each and every client I have had in front of the Nikons for being brilliant and allowing me to photograph their special day in my natural style. Thank you guys! (Wow, this is almost turning into an acceptance speech… 😉 )

I hope you like them. If you do…why not get in touch to discuss your wedding day. The 2018 Diary is filling up quickly now, and I wouldn’t want to disappoint anybody by being unavailable…

Oakfield House Wedding at Chester Zoo

Unique Wedding Venue

Claire & James invited me to their Oakfield House wedding in Chester Zoo as their wedding photographer. Oakfield House is a stunning, unique wedding venue. It’s next door to the lion enclosure in the zoo. I wasn’t going to say no! I love Oakfield House wedding photography; perfect for my natural style of wedding photography. There are more Oakfield House and Chester weddings at the bottom of the page…

Doubletree by Hilton Hotel & Spa Chester

Claire and the girls were getting ready at The Double Tree about a mile or so away from Chester Zoo. The mood was full of anticipation and excitement for the day ahead. I popped in to see the groomsmen too, and they were really ‘up for it’ (so they told me). Fingers crossed for the weather holding and we were set for a brilliant, unique wedding in Chester Zoo!

Oakfield House Weddings

Oakfield house is situtaed next to the lion enclosure, and we could hear them  for most of the day. Slightly surreal, but all part of this unique wedding venue’s charm. The groomsmen arrived and walked through to Oakfield House with their buttonholes. A couple of ladies came to the lads’ rescue with the buttonholes!

As the guests arrived, and ceremony time was fast-approaching, the lads nipped out with a sly hipflask…well, it’d be rude not to!

Claire arrived with a few minutes on our side, so time for a fe formals of her and dad, bridesmaids etc, before we were ‘live’ again and the ceremony was about to begin. I was using a 24-70mm zoom outside but for most of the day I used prime lenses, 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm on the two Nikon D750 bodies.

After  drinks and congratulations, we were off for a quick twenty minute portrait session around Oakfield House. By now Claire and James couldn’t / wouldn’t stop laughing; they were so happy. Brilliant!

Afternoon Tea in Chester

From the bride and groom wedding photos, we were off for afternoon tea. Proper afternoon tea too. Awesome…and very well received by the wedding guests. Speeches were to be later on the day, and we had a choice of options…just to keep me in my toes. But for now I had a break with a cup of tea and my own butties. My solititude was to be shortlived as Gavin and the boys from The Rush Band walked in to the rear lounge to set up for the evening party. The Rush Band are arguably the best and busiest wedding and events band in the north west, and you really have to check them out for your wedding. Front man Gavin can power a small village alone, with the energy he exudes whilst performing… 😉

Evening wedding speeches outside Oakfield House

Yes, it was October. Yes, it was going dark. Yes, it wasn’t exactly thirty degrees, but it worked…brilliantly. The speeches were outside Oakfield House as the band had finished sound checking. Great fun to shoot, but challenging with all the different coour light sources and a rapidly fading sky. Let’s hear it for fast prime lenses…

The Rush Band

Like a switch, the Rush Band fired up and hit the first song. Like a switch also, the dancefloor filled with around fifty dancers….totally packed, amnd remained so for the rest of the time I was shooting there. Incredible! I had very little space to move until Claire & James hit their first dance and we had a little mote space to play with. That didn’t last long beofre we were swamped again… 😉 What an incredible atmosphere and gig. Cheers guys.

Julie“I have just sobbed all the way through your slideshow it was perfect and captured the day, us, and was everything we had hoped for. Thank you for doing us proud”

Julie & Chris were married at Chester Town Hall recently, with a fantastic, intimate family reception at The Joseph Benjamin restaurant. Chris contacted me to photograph his and Julie’s wedding since he really liked my natural style and approach to photographing weddings. A keen (and very good) photographer himself, Chris asked me to be their Chester Wedding Photographer, and to capture their special day how I saw fit. I love it when clients say that! I opted to photograph the day entirely on prime lenses, bar ten minutes on a 24-70mm zoom (to save time in the rain!) – and to give the collection a proper reportage / documentary / filmic feel. No pressure then…. 😉

I caught up with Julie and her daughter Jess at the Ba Ba Guest House on the Hoole Road. I had around thirty minutes before having to leave for the registry office at the Town Hall. Chris was in great form as the guests started to arrive – all 30+ of them. This was going to be brilliant. Still armed with a couple of Nikons and a 24mm and 50mm combination, I duly ‘did my thing’, keeping an eye on the clock for a slightly nervous Julie’s taxi…due around 11am.

Chester Wedding Photographer // Nicola & Matt

Nicola & Matt were married at Oakfield Manor in Chester Zoo recently. I never discuss my clients’ occupations, but safe to say these guys work in the same profession, and were married during half term… 😉 I have to say, I love Oakfield Manor and Chester Zoo as a wedding venue. It is unique, and perfect for a wedding of 60 guests or less…plus you get free passes to wander round and see the animals! Nicola and Matt live in Chester, and chose Oakfield Manor as their wedding venue for it’s unique qualities and privacy – and great call it was. I caught up with Nicola and the girls hidden amongst the hustle and bustle of hairdryers and mirrors. It was all very relaxed, no signs of nerves anywhere…not even me (ha), and I quietly got on with things in my natural unobtrusive style. Things ran like clockwork, so I was soon over to Oakfield Manor to catch up with Matt and the arrival of the guests. Even the registrars were relaxed, and let me do my thing, while they did theirs…brilliant!

It wasn’t so long ago that we had met in Chester to shoot the couple’s E-Shoot. A proper ice-breaker this proved to be…not! Nic and Matt were just brilliant for camera, being themselves, having fun and ignoring me for the most part…..a perfect rehearsal for their wedding day! So fast forward a few weeks, and we were all gathered again, with me as their Chester Wedding Photographer…oh, and 60+ more guests.

And, running with the clockwork theme, the day ticked along perfectly to my timetable. No fuss, stress or hassles…in fact we were early after having shot our short formal session in the gardens. Time enough for another beer Matt (sorry, couldn‘t resist that one..)

As dusk approached, so did the speeches. Gathered in the main oak-panelled room in the Manor, the lights were dimmed for the four speeches (two Best Men). I found myself a little penned in and stuck in one position to shoot from….there simply was no room for me to walk about. The lighting was very low too – and for all you photographers out there, I was running at 6400 and 3200 ISO on two separate Nikons. Breaking with tradition of using fast prime lenses, I had to use a 70-200mm zoom…yes, in those lighting conditions…to get some of the images. And we nailed it!chester_wedding_photographer_54chester_wedding_photographer_55chester_wedding_photographer_56chester_wedding_photographer_57chester_wedding_photographer_58chester_wedding_photographer_59chester_wedding_photographer_60chester_wedding_photographer_61chester_wedding_photographer_62chester_wedding_photographer_63

The evening entertainment was focused around Kyle Harris – a brilliant vocalist based in Chester – and worth checking out! He sang two sets, with a DJ set mixed in to keep the dance floor filled all night…

The Abode Chester Wedding Photography // Wendy & Gwion

The Abode Chester Wedding Photography // Wendy & Gwion

 the_abode_wedding_photography_48

Wendy & Gwion were married recently at The Abode in Chester giving me this opportunity of demonstrating some of my work –  ‘The Abode Chester Wedding Photography’. A very unassuming couple, incredibly polite and well-mannered, but painfully camera-shy at the same time, Wendy & Gwion invited me to capture their day ‘in my style’, and document their fantastic urban wedding at The Abode. Wendy didn’t want her preparations being photographed, which I fully respected (some clients do, some don’t); both her and Gwion wanted no fuss, no having to pose for cheesy formal images, or for me to ‘take over’ any part of their day. Instead I was asked to capture their family-orientated intimate wedding from the guests’ arrival to just after the speeches – no first dance was planned, so ‘no need for me to hang around’. It’s quite an interesting brief when a good third of a wedding photographer’s shooting day is not requested, meaning that in this instance, my approach was more measured than usual, with less time constraints and mini deadlines to hit….weirdly. It also meant that I really could do my own thing and document Wendy & Gwion’s day in an urban style, tying in with the feel of the fantastic hotel and Michael Caines’ restaurant on the 5th floor.

the_abode_wedding_photography_01the_abode_wedding_photography_02the_abode_wedding_photography_03the_abode_wedding_photography_04the_abode_wedding_photography_05the_abode_wedding_photography_06the_abode_wedding_photography_07the_abode_wedding_photography_08the_abode_wedding_photography_09

The weather wasn’t the best, but that didn’t really affect us, since we would be inside all day, save for a few minutes of family groups and fifteen minutes of (non cheesy!) bride & groom portraits. The overcast day allowed me to go for a very film-like style, complete with authentic grain and a retro look……not vintage!! ahem… 😉

Right on cue Wendy appeared, to meet the registrars for her short interview. It took a few of us by surprise, since we were expecting the lift doors to open..but no – even more Ninja-esque than myself was this beautiful bride….hmm, I must work on my stealth-like technique more 😉

From the ceremony, we ventured outside for a few group shots, allowing us a few minutes to slowly make our way back into the hotel, and shoot a few portraits on the go. Nope…still NO cheese…

Michael Caines’ restaurant is simply stunning, and the food is to die for – well worth checking out, trust me! The guests were very excited to be here for the wedding breakfast and speeches. Me too…

We cut the cake before going in for the wedding breakfast, since it would form the basis of dessert…nice touch that. The speeches were before the meal, so I carried on shooting for around thirty minutes before the meal was served. Unfortunately I had to leave, but I’m so appreciative that I got to photograph Wendy & Gwion’s wedding day at The Abode.

CHESTER WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER – KERRY & CHRIS

CHESTER WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER – KERRY & CHRIS

Kerry & Chris were married in August at St John’s church, in Mosley Common, with a reception at The Doubletree by Hilton, Chester. I left this wedding until now, to remind me what summer was actually like – the few days it wasn’t raining!

Kerry & Chris’ wedding was a small, intimate affair, with a lovely atmosphere. Chris is from Australia, and brought his immediate close family across to see him tie the knot to the ever-bubbly Kerry. Clergy duties were performed by close friend ‘Rocket’ Julian – who, by all accounts has a fascination with all things firework-based, whilst transport was suitably supplied by Graham from I Do Taxi.

From the church, it was down the M56 to Chester for the reception, beautifully backed by the Christine Tobin Band, who entertained everybody throughout the pre-meal drinks, and evening celebrations.

A beautiful wedding, with all the ‘A’ list family & friends on board – and all shot by available light…with no intrusive flash too!

The post production on these images features an authentic Fuji film stock, complete with grain – a look I really quite like and will possibly use more of in the future…
