Gilpin Lake House Wedding – Sarah & Charlotte

Gilpin Lake House Wedding – Sarah & Charlotte

Gilpin Lake House Wedding

Highlights from Sarah & Charlotte’s summer wedding at this stunning Lake District venue.

A Gilpin Lake House Wedding in the Summer

Sarah & Charlotte asked me to photograph their Gilpin Lake House wedding, having seen my work at The Great Northern Wedding Show in Bolton – an event which happens twice a year at The Bolton USN Arena. How could I say no? The wedding was booked for June, but as we all know, the Lake District weather can be a proper lottery. So…here we were at the stunning Lake House, all secluded and private with an out door ceremony planned. But we had rain. Lots of Lake District rain! But, nobody seemed bothered as we switched to Plan B, and opted for an indoor ceremony with around a hundred guests in the main house.

Weddings at The Gilpin

Sarah & Charlotte were getting ready together with some friends and family members. The door to the suite seemed to revolve with a steady stream of well-wishers peeping round the door to say hello and good luck. This was to be my first visit to Gilpin Lake House, and already I was loving the freedom that the girls allowed me – ‘Documentary wedding photography,  Lake District style‘. As the guests arrived in their cars and minibus, the atmosphere was building…so, alas was the rain. 🙁

Stylish Lake District Wedding

As the guests arrived, I opted to capture this stylish Lake District wedding on prime lenses, mostly a 50mm and a 35mm. These lenses allow me to work in low light without using flash, so I can blend in with the guests more. As the Lake House was filling, I was down to using more wide angle lenses for the girls’ arrival into the ceremony room. It was going to be tight for space, but if we all breathed in a bit…

Unique Wedding Entertainment

From the ceremony, we ran…literally…to the marquee behind the Lake House. Waiting for us, and firing up on cue were the incredible Mr Wilson’s Second Liners. Seeing (and hearing) is believing with these guys. Full on club anthems, New Order and Human League etc covers – all on brass and ukelele – incredilble! That was everybody sorted for the next hour or so, whilst the canapes and cocktails flowed…and the weather broke for the better.

Wedding speeches in a marquee

The speeches for Sarah & Charlotte’s wedding were to prove…er, colourful. Sarah’s brother was up second and was simply hilarious….all at Sarah’s expense! I cannot recall the content, but trust me, he didn’t pull any punches and brought the marquee to it’s knees in laughter. Then…it was Sarah’s turn. And whatever she had received, she gave back double, and totally floored her brother and his speech, bringing the whole house down to thunderous laughter and applause. Trust me, it was an impressive performance! After everyone had recovered and eaten the wedding breakfast, Sarah, Charlotte & myself popped out for ten minutes to grab some portraits before the cake cut. No first dance as such, just a relaxed ‘boogie on down’ was planned after the nieces had put on a dancing performance to the newlyweds as a present….brilliant stuff.

Mitton Hall Wedding

Popular Lancashire wedding venues

A Mitton Hall wedding is one of Lancashire’s most popular, at one of the most popular venues too;  ‘A stunning country house hotel in the heart of the Ribble Valley’ is how it’s described, and with good reason. As popular Lancashire wedding venues go, Mitton Hall is also high up on the wedding photographers’ Top 10 venues to work at. It has everything from dark, oak panelled rooms, a stunning main hall area, plus a seemingly constantly evolving garden landscape in which to capture stunning wedding images. Here are some of the highlights from their autumn wedding, with most of the wedding suppliers sourced via Little White Books

Lancashire Makeup Artist

On makeup duties was the very talented Suzanne Nix from Suzanne Jayne Beauty in Chorley. I know Suzanne quite well – I photographed her wedding to Danny back in August at Rivington Hall Barn. The flowers were hand delivered by Sarah Crookston herself from The Rose Boutique in Pemberton. Lovely to see you again Sarah!

Lancashire Wedding Video

Working alongside me for the day were the award-winning duo that is Helen & Dave from Abbey Video in Whalley. These guys won the Best Wedding Videographers 2017/18 section in the Great Northern Wedding Awards alongside myself (I won Best Male Photographer!) Helen stayed with the girls as they were finishing their preparations, while I made my way to church to catch up with Dave and the groomsmen for a few relaxed formal portraits. Well, we had a little time on our hands for a change! 😉

Beautiful wedding transport

From the church, we headed 30 mins across Lancashire to Mitton Hall. Jodie & Kane travelled in style with a beautiful wedding car from Malvern Wedding Cars. I managed to beat the happy couple to the venue by three minutes…phew! A few formal images with the car later, we headed off into the gardens to beat the weather and failing light…(and also to allow the guests to get served at the bar!). Dave and myself worked together seemlessly for around 15 minutes grabbing some lovely natural moments between the newlyweds. This wedding was a little more formal in style than I normally shoot, but I was enjoying every minute of it! While we were outside, the guests were being entertained by the talented Tom Scothern.

Waiting inside was also one of the most stunning wedding cakes I have ever seen. Classic, simple and very understated. A beautifiul work of art from Kelly at the Pink Frosting Cake Company.

Recommended wedding DJ

With speeches finished, it was soon time for the evening entartainment to commence. On hand were renowned wedding company DFC and one of their brilliant DJ’s. With a brilliantly choreographed cake cut, first dance and father & daughter dance, the evening hit the ground running! On hand too, were Agent Smith – a local (and brilliant) Rock & Pop Wedding Band. All amps up to eleven then…

Styal Lodge Wedding

Highlights from Claire & Matt’s brilliant Styal Lodge wedding

“Dear Mick – thank you for our truly stunning wedding photos. We absolutely love them and haven’t stopped looking at them. Loving all the happy memories that have been captured so beautifully. Thank you for making us feel so relaxed throughout our special day, we couldn’t have asked for a better or nicer photographer…”

Love Claire & Matthew

Styal Lodge Wedding Venue

Claire & Matt booked me for their late summer Styal Lodge Wedding around a year ago. I love a good Styal Lodge wedding, and curiously this was my only visit for 2017 (I’d spent most of 2017 in Lancashire). But great to be back, and especially catching up with Sarah & Neil from Pink Pepper Catering – awesome wedding and events caterers. I seem to remember I photographed the first Styal Lodge wedding when the venue first opened. The weather was quite the opposite…heavy rain and blustery winds all day! But Claire & Matt’s special day was going to be brilliant – literally; the sun was out and looked like it was going to stay.

Exclusive use wedding venue

A Styal Lodge wedding comes as an exclusive use venue, and everything just works, brilliantly. Even Matt & the groomsmen getting ready in the Clubhouse changing rooms next door, a Styal Lodge wedding has a very ‘hand-made’ feel to it – high quality with little fuss. As the lads were getting ready, so was Claire and the girls, so I got to jump between both rooms to capture the action.

Relaxed family wedding

Claire & Matt’s wedding was a proper relaxed family wedding. With Neil at the helm, the day ran like clockwork; the ushers did a brilliant job organising the guests for the family group photos, and everybody got chance to grab an ice cream from the lovely Adele and her stunning vintage ice cream van from Dotty About Ice Cream

Brilliant Wedding speeches

From a lovely time spent outside on the patio, we now moved indoors to the stunningly laid-out room. Time for the wedding breakfast and speeches. Speeches at a Styal Lodge wedding are always entertaining; heartfelt, poignant maybe, but always brilliant to listen to (yes, I know I should be concentrating on the job!) Claire’s father’s speech was brilliant – a proper rollercoaster of emotions keeping Claire on her toes / chair 😉 Matt & his ‘stunt double’ Best Man were also very funny too, making the while Styal Lodge wedding a proper experience for all the guests.

Cheshire Wedding Band

Agent Smith were booked for the evening entratainment. A brilliant, modern band from seemingly everywhwre…I have worked with them a few times and they are always fantastic to dance to…erm, the guests not me! 😉 They got the party started with ease, and soon everyone was up ‘Swinging their pants to some modern toonz…’ With the evening buffet beckoning, it was time for me to head home. A brilliant day for Styal Lodge Wedding…

King Street Townhouse Winter Wedding – Sarah & Rich

King Street Townhouse Winter Wedding – Sarah & Rich

King Street Townhouse Winter Wedding

Highlights from Sarah & Rich’s winter wedding at this unique Manchester wedding venue

King Street Townhouse Winter Wedding

King Street Townhouse is a relatively new Manchester-based wedding venue. It is owned by the Eclectic Hotels Collection, who also own On The 7th and Great John Street Hotel where I have also photographed weddings. This was to be my first wedding shoot there, just before Christmas last year. And, being December, the Manchester weather was not perfect….rain and more rain. All day! Not to be deterred, I was to approach this King Street Townhouse winter wedding with the minimum amount of kit. I travelled light, with two Nikon bodies and four prime lenses. This winter wedding was to have proper documentary-style coverage.

Manchester Makeup Artist

I got to Sarah’s suite to find the very talented Jodie on hair and makeup duties….together with her funky new ring light. The atmosphere was all calm, as Sarah and her friends were getting ready; I even had time to catch up with Rich and his mates for the ten minutes it takes for groomsmen to get ready. Easy peasy being a fella. My being a King Street Townhouse wedding photographer was suiting the 24mm, 35mm  and 50mm lenses perfectly.

Wedding ceremony at King Street Townhouse

Sarah & Rich’s winter wedding at King Street Townhouse was to be an emotional day. Sarah’s mum had recently passed away, and the air was tinged with mixed emotion. And it was Christmas too, which brings everything home to families. Sarah’s friend was brave enough to do a reading during the ceremony; something specific and a difficult passage to convey. But she did it, brilliantly.

Manchester wedding reception

The rain was still falling, so we photographed a handful of family photographs in the ceremony room, then retired to a lounge for drinks and canapes. The air was buzzing with excited chatter amongst the wedding guests, and the canapes were coming thick and fast…as was the Prosseco! I noticed too, that several of the ladies were already sporting Pantone’s 2018 official colour. Time was moving on, but the rain was going nowhere. Sarah, Rich and myself headed downstairs for a few couple photographs in and around the venue.

Wedding photos at King Street Townhouse

Armed with a small off-camera flashgun and fifteen minutes to create some portraits in the atmospheric lobby and mezzanine, we were off and running. Still no chance of going outside, we didn’t care and had sime fun…in the dry. I used a combination of 20mm, 24mm and 35mm lenses for the portraits – all natural light with a splash of flash to boost them.

Winter weddings in Manchester

Soon we were back upstairs as the guests were taking their places in the stunning, candlelit dining room. The reception looked stunning and very ‘Christmassy’. As the guests gathered, this almost intimate wedding was looking very nice through the Nikons.Very nice indeed. The champagne was being poured as Sarah & Rich entered the room, to thunderous cheering and applause. I left the guests in peace until the speeches. I was expecting a rollercoaster of emotion, and got it. Sarah’s dad was very brave and tried to do the traditional father of the bride speech, but, understandably it was all too much. It was too much for me, to try and remain neutral and just do my job. But when you have a daughter of your own, it is very difficult. Suddenly Rich and Best Man jumped into action and made us all laugh again. The mono image of Sarah & her dad hugging is one of the most moving images I have ever taken, and one I find difficult to look at.

Wedding DJ in Manchester

After the speeches, we were all outside to brave the Manchester eweather. The canopies were overhead, the heaters were on and the coffee and hot chocolate in full flow. There were even blankets for the ‘southerners’ to wrap up warm in, 😉 After a while we were back inside. Full on cake cutting, first dance and general dancefloor malarkey – all handled brilliantly by DJ NIck Campbell.

Highlights from Rebecca & Mike’s wedding at this stunning Media City venue

The Lowry Theatre Wedding Venue

Rebecca & Mike were married at The Lowry recently, allowing me to show more of my Lowry Theatre Wedding Photography. The Lowry Theatre is a fantastic modern wedding venue – very funky and unique. Here are some of the images from their big day…

lowry-theatre-wedding-photographer001

I caught up with Becs having her makeup applied at her parents’ house. She’d been to the hairdressers with the girls and now everyone had disbanded to regroup before the cars arrived. My session with becs and her family was short in comparison, but I was asked to do my own thing and cover the wedding day as time (and our schedule) allowed. We did ok – but it was a 30 minute journey through Manchester to get to The Lowry, so timekeeping was paramount.

Once at The Lowry, guests were gathering for this special family event; lots of hugs, lots of smiles, plus a very tight-lipped Best Man over the content of his speech!

lowry-theatre-wedding-photographer021 lowry-theatre-wedding-photographer022 lowry-theatre-wedding-photographer023

Becs and the girls arrived slightly late, in funky modern VW Beetle and clssic campervans. Slightly nervous, (Becs was not really one for being the centre of attention), our bride was in good hands, Dad Mike at the helm, steadying the ship…
